ProLiteracy Kicks off the New Year in Latin America!

We at ProLiteracy are excited to start 2011 by visiting partner programs in Latin America! In January 2011, Alesha Anderson, international programs coordinator, and Lynn Curtis, international services consultant, are traveling to Haiti, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Colombia, visiting literacy and micro finance projects.

Here are some exciting updates on site visits to the following programs:

Fonkoze
Fonkoze is the largest micro finance institution in Haiti, working with 45,000 borrowers, most of whom are women living and working in the countryside of Haiti. Currently they are working with ProLiteracy to help more than 8,000 women improve their lives by becoming literate and starting small businesses. Fonkoze has been partnering with ProLiteracy for six years.

Organizaccion
Organizaccion is a grass roots non-governmental organization (NGO) that works with local government councils in five provinces around Ecuador. Organizaccion provides capacity building and professional development to community leaders on topics such as: civic participation, accountability, democracy and transparency, education, and human rights.

CLEBA
One of ProLiteracy’s historical partners, we have been working with CLEBA for more than 25 years. Working in several barrios around the city of Medellin, CLEBA offers literacy instruction and capacity building through different kinds of trainings. With support from the Citi Foundation, CLEBA has been able to offer several income generating workshops for literacy participants this year.

  1. What is it like to visit these sites? Are you conducting research during your visit?

  2. @Kristucker visiting partner program sites is always very interesting. We learn something new with each program we visit. Our site visits are always used to conduct training, as well as monitor and evaluate programs. Many of our donors have strict due diligence requirements and we also use these visits to meet these requirements and also do organizational research for future programs and funding opportunities.
