ProLiteracy Seeking Summer 2010 Interns!!!!

ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION
ProLiteracy is a non-profit educational organization that supports literacy programs in the United States and developing countries. Working through a global network of over 80 grassroots non-governmental organizations worldwide, ProLiteracy provides modest funding, training, and technical assistance to support community-based adult literacy efforts. Partner programs focus on basic education and problem solving combined with action. Our partners work in one or more of the following six action areas: economic self-reliance, health, education, environmental sustainability, human rights, peace, and the status of women.

INTERNATIONAL SITE PLACEMENTS
ProLiteracy seeks qualified volunteer interns to work at selected partner program sites in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Volunteers and Interns representing ProLiteracy may provide a variety of services including training and technical assistance to local program leaders, community facilitators and learners during a period of approximately 1 month to 6 months usually between May and August (depending on the site). On-site work usually entails integrating participatory teaching models into existing curricula, which focus on health, micro-enterprise, education, environmental sustainability, peace and/or human rights. Interns collaborate with NGO leaders to conduct trainings in rural communities, produce learning materials and collect data about programs. Prior to initiating fieldwork, interns will receive training in project methodology and local program procedures.

COSTS
ProLiteracy internships are unpaid. Interns are responsible for covering the cost of travel and in-country expenses while in the host country. Airfare should be estimated at $1,500 - $3,000 but vary greatly depending on the destination.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Interested applicants should send a letter of intent that includes (1) why they would like to participate in this internship, (2) what they hope to gain from the experience, and (3) their programmatic and geographical area(s) of interest. Along with the letter, please include a current resume that includes international and leadership experience and contact information for two references from academic, work, or volunteer experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS
ProLiteracy seeks interns and volunteers who demonstrate an understanding of international development issues, cross-cultural awareness, and a commitment to community-based social change. Previous international experience is necessary. Fluency in a foreign language is helpful and Spanish is required for Latin American placements. Interns will need to have completed their senior year in college to participate.
