PACE Ghana

PACE Ghana is a community based library project initiated by a Ghanaian immigrant to the United States. Since its establishment, The Okyeame Dankwa Memorial Community Library Why Ghana?

Though Ghanaian citizens enjoy peace and prosperity relative to other West African countries, their incomes are still among the lowest in the world. Because many of the people are very poor, only 60% of the children are able to attend primary school and only 30% move on to Secondary School. In Ghana, roughly 37 percent of male citizens cannot read or write, and significantly more women, 54 percent, also lack basic literacy skills. As indicated by George Benneh, Chairman of the National Council for Tertiary Education in Ghana, “Education is essential if Ghana and other African countries are ever to solve their problems of food security, health, good governance and other developmental priorities.”

Pace has been providing essential educational tools: books, computers, newspapers, literacy classes, HIV/AIDS workshops and educational video programs. It has more than 3,000 adult and children’s books, and offers adult literacy classes, computer literacy, and other programs for youth and adults. The establishment of the Okyeame Dankwa Memorial Library in Worawora three years ago has played a significant role in the community. Most students have stopped roaming the town after school hours and prefer reading at the library. Students now get free access to books to broaden their knowledge and improve their academic performance. Increased Attention to Adult Literacy : U.S. Government and UN Join Forces

ProLiteracy’s 80 years of global experience have caused us to recognize the tragic reality that adult literacy, a crucial element of the development and poverty reduction process, is often missing from key international policy discussions. In the past few weeks, the adult literacy topic has been highlighted among top government and international organizations in three critical areas. Educating Girls Today, 796 million adults worldwide lack basic literacy skills; two-thirds of that population are women. UNESCO recently announced a joint project with the United States Department of State, targeting education rates among women. The program , “Better Lives, Better Future” will help stem dropout rates of adolescent girls as they transition from primary to secondary education. Today, On March 8, 2011, we mark the Global Centenary for International Women’s Day – 100 years since the first International Women's Day. More than one million women and men attended rallies in 1911. Today, we remember and honor the achievements women have made all over the world. The United Nations Global Theme for International Women’s Day 2011 is: Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women.
